The multilink front suspension and the traditional leaf springs on the rear resulted in remarkable off road driving and proved the Cherokee to be more enjoyable to drive than its earlier predecessor.
The introduction of a new automatic four liter engine in 1987 turned it into a performance vehicle and sales continued to thrive. The Cherokee's Command-Trac (part-time) and the Selec-Trac (full-time) four wheel drive suspension system revolutionized the Cherokee and set it apart from other SUV's. The manufacturers also produced a two wheel drive and a diesel with a Renault engine. In 1985, a 2.1 liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel was added to the line.
However, the diesel Cherokee was discontinued by 1988. In 1986, the 2.5 liter engine gained fuel injection, which increased the horsepower to 117.
