International 500 Series C Dozer Service Manual
International Harvester - Farmall manuals are a must for any IHC owner, offering part. International Harvester 500 Industrial Tractor Engine Manuals, International. International Harvester TD25C Crawler C Series Engine Manuals. The time to read over the many International Harvester manual categories you will see.
I just bought this International 500 crawler with a 4 in 1 DROTT bucket the other day. The model # is 500D356 and the serial # is H3760S. It seems to be in pretty good shape but I am not a heavy equipment guy. The only issue is that you really need to pull on the left turn lever with all you got to get it to work. The guy says he has all the manuals but could not find them at the time of sale and will send them to me if and when they turn up but I may want to address the steering issue before that. I am interested in any and all information and or opinions that you guys might have on these crawlers. Thanks, Marc.
Sounds like your steering clutch and brake are out of adjustment. If your brake is engaging before the clutch is fully released, the lever will be very hard to pull back enough, and then if you do get it back far enough, the tractor will generally turn with a jerk. It's been awhile since I've adjusted them on my dad's tractor, but if memory serves, the brakes are adjusted through an access cover above the steering clutch, and the clutch is adjusted on the linkage between the lever and the small lever on top of the bevel gear housing. Good Luck DD.
Thanks for the ideas guys, that sounds about right. It pulls hard and I need to put a foot up so I can pull it hard enough to actually turn the crawler.

I can see how the linkage is adjustable between the pull lever and the lever that under the seat but I have no idea what you mean by access cover above the steering clutch. This is my first crawler style toy and I am not exactly sure what parts are where. I am pretty mechanically inclined once I get an idea on what I am looking for but I may need the 'Idiot's Guide To Dozer's' version for the first few repairs. I will try and take a better look under the seat if I can get a little decent weather to remove the seat. If I find this access cover what am I looking for inside to adjust?
Thanks again, Marc. I've been thinking about the adjustments a bit more, and I think what I said about brake adjustment may be wrong. The one we have is a very early 500 (1967) and may be different from the newer ones. The clutch adjustment is as I posted before, with an adjustable link between the two levers. On our earlier tractor, if look right at the base of the long lever that you pull on,there is a small L shaped lever coming out of the steering clutch cover, with a 3/8 bolt with a jam nut on it. That 3/8 bolt is your brake adjustment.
Adjust the adjustable link, so that you can feel the release bearing contact the clutch forks to start releasing the clutch when the lever is pulled back about 2 inches.(Back off the brake adjustment first) Then adjust the brake lever so that it begins to apply the brake at about half way through the lever travel, probably about 4 or 5 inches of lever travel, and that's all there is to it. Hope this works for you DD. Ok, this is what I found. I am guessing that the arm closest to the front of the crawler is the brake arm and the one closer to the rear is the clutch.
The right side seems to be adjusted just like you said and that makes sense because it is working just fine. The left side clutch has some tension on it constantly. There is no free play movement of the turning lever. It looks like the bolt that adjusts the brake application is turned all the way in in order to try and get more/earlier braking. Is it reasonable to think that the clutch is about gone and that is why someone has preloaded it to try and get more life out of it? I am thinking that the brake is working fine because when it does grab it works but the clutch may not be disengaging at all times in order for the brake to do its job. What are your thoughts?

Most likely water. Suspect that it got water in the filter and froze and then was run and blew the filter. Thanks Stonecold Does your machine have a reverser?
If so there should be a trans cooler sitting in front of the radiator. Get a couple of 5 gal. I think I took the top hose out of the cooler, put it in a bucket. Start the engine and the fluid should be pumped into the bucket.
I have a 1974 500c Dozer but I think yours might be similar. Ok, we got the whole left clutch/brake torn apart, cleaned up and put back together and still no drive power to the left track. I am guessing that the left clutch discs are shot and am going to have to replace them. The inner teeth on the fiber discs were sheared off and there was quite a bit of surface rust on the steel discs, the pressure plate and the inner brake drum. We used a wire brush on an angle grinder to clean the metal parts up best that we could but all metal surfaced still have some pitting. My big question is, if I get new fiber and steel discs will the pitting on the inner brake drum surface and clutch plate be a problem?
Second question is, if I repair the left side should I just do both at the same time or just wait until the other side starts to fail before spending the money for that side? Big difference between clutch disc replacement at $267 per side and replacing the whole assembly at $807 per side. Thanks, Marc.
